Our partner organization, the “Corporación Humanas” recently participated in two significant hearings before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) during its 189th session period in February 2024.
The first hearing, held on February 27, focused on the right to full reparation for victims of the armed conflict in Colombia. Viviana Rodríguez, legal coordinator of the “Corporación Humanas,” highlighted three major concerns:
1. The definition of “victim” and the consequences of non-recognition in the Unique Victims Registry: Viviana emphasized the shortcomings of Law 1448 of 2014 in this regard.
2. Insufficient reparations measures taken by the Special Jurisdiction for Peace: The organization expressed concerns about the effectiveness of these measures.
3. The 2-year statute of limitations for the administrative request of human rights violations: Viviana advocated for a more flexible deadline to ensure better protection of victims’ rights.
Additionally, the “Corporación Humanas” underscored the importance of the participation of female victims in the development of reparations measures, as well as the need for unified accreditation of victims at the national level.
On February 29, during a regional hearing on the reintegration of incarcerated women, Viviana highlighted the organization’s concerns regarding the excessive use of incarceration as a solution to social conflicts involving women in Colombia. She advocated for exploring alternative solutions such as restorative justice, which is better suited to the needs of women.
We commend the continued commitment of the ” Corporación Humanas” to the rights of women and victims in Colombia, and we pledge to support their efforts to promote justice and equality in the region.
